Datadog API: what you can do and how to use it with AI agents
The Datadog API lets you query metrics and logs, create and mute monitors, record events, and manage incidents and dashboards. SRE, DevOps and platform teams that run cloud environments use it. Access combines an API key and an application key from your organization.
What the Datadog API offers
Metrics
Send custom metrics and query time series.
Logs
Search and aggregate the logs the platform collects.
Monitors
Create, edit and mute alerts, and check their state.
Events
Record events such as deploys and configuration changes.
Incidents
Open and update incidents, with owners and a timeline.
Dashboards and SLOs
Manage dashboards and track service level objectives.
How to access the Datadog API
- With your company’s credentialsThe API key identifies the organization, and the application key sets the permissions of whoever makes the call. Application keys can have restricted scopes.
- Logs can contain personal data or secrets: limit what the agent queries and passes along.
- Requests are rate limited per endpoint: avoid broad, frequent queries.
- Use the URL for your account's region (for example, US or EU).

What an iTeam agent does with the Datadog API
Triage of the overnight alert
When a monitor fires, the agent pulls the logs and metrics for that window, checks them against the latest deploy and hands the on-call engineer a summary.
Deploys recorded as events
The agent records each deploy in Datadog, so it is easy to see whether a problem started after a change.
Muting during maintenance, with approval
Before a maintenance window, the agent proposes muting the affected monitors and applies it once someone approves.
Weekly SLO report
The agent gathers the error budget burn for each service and flags the ones close to the limit.
From the credential to the agent at work, with approval
Create a scoped application key
Generate an API key and a service-account application key, with read-only scopes at the start.
Store it in the iTeam vault
Add the keys and the Datadog region to the vault, and set which agents can read and which can change monitors.
Expand with approval
Allow actions such as muting monitors or opening incidents only with approval from the on-call team.

Questions about the Datadog API
Is the Datadog API free?
The API is not billed separately, but the metrics, logs and other data you send count toward your Datadog plan usage.
Do I need to write code to use the Datadog API with iTeam?
Not necessarily. iTeam reads the documentation and the deployment team configures the queries and actions. Datadog also offers an MCP server on some accounts.
Can the agent resolve the incident on its own?
It speeds up diagnosis and prepares actions. Changes in production stay with approval from whoever is on call.
