Google Cloud APIs: What You Can Do and How to Use Them with AI Agents
Google Cloud exposes nearly all of its services through REST and gRPC APIs, with client libraries for many languages. Engineering, data and IT teams use these APIs to provision resources, query data and automate operations. Access is per project, with service accounts and IAM permissions.
What the Google Cloud API offers
Cloud Storage
List, read and write objects in buckets and manage access policies.
BigQuery
Run SQL queries, create tables and load or export data.
Compute and Kubernetes
Look up and manage VMs, clusters and workloads.
Pub/Sub
Publish and consume messages between systems.
IAM and Resource Manager
Manage projects, service accounts and access roles.
Logging, Monitoring and billing
Read logs, metrics and alerts, and track costs per project.
How to access the Google Cloud API
- With your company’s credentialsThe APIs use OAuth 2.0. For automation, the standard is a service account with minimal IAM roles, ideally with identity federation instead of a JSON key.
- Give minimal IAM roles, per project. Actions that create or delete resources stay behind approval.
- BigQuery queries are billed by the volume read: the agent uses a byte limit and a cost preview.
- Each API has its own quotas per project, visible in the console.

What an iTeam agent does with the Google Cloud API
Data analyst on BigQuery
The agent takes a question in Slack, writes the query, runs it with a limit on bytes processed and returns the answer along with the SQL it used.
Cost watch
Every day the agent compares spend per project with the average and alerts the owner when a service spikes.
Incident triage
When an alert fires, the agent gathers logs and metrics for the period and opens the ticket with a summary of what changed.
Access hygiene
The agent lists unused service accounts and old keys and proposes revoking them for the security team to approve.
From the credential to the agent at work, with approval
Create the service account
In the Google Cloud project, enable the APIs you need and create a service account with minimal roles (for example, read access to BigQuery).
Store the access and limit what each agent does
Google Cloud access is registered in the iTeam vault. You choose which agents use it and what they can do (query BigQuery, read logs, view billing), with a cost cap and a record of every call.
Run the pilot with approval
In the pilot, run a small query and check the record in the Google Cloud audit log. The team approves sensitive actions and follows the call history in iTeam.

Questions about the Google Cloud API
Is the Google Cloud API free?
Calling the APIs usually carries no charge of its own, but the services you consume (queries, storage, machines) are billed by usage, and some products have free tiers. See the Google Cloud pricing calculator.
Do I need to write code to use the Google Cloud API with iTeam?
Not necessarily. iTeam's deployment team sets up Google Cloud access and each agent's actions from the documentation. IT only provides the credential and reviews the permissions.
Does iTeam use MCP for Google Cloud?
It can. Besides the direct API, there are MCP servers for Google Cloud services, such as databases and BigQuery, and iTeam picks the safest path for your environment.
