Confluence API: what it can do and how to use it with AI agents

The Confluence REST API, from Atlassian, lets you read, create and update pages, spaces, comments and attachments, and run searches. Teams that keep their knowledge base in Confluence and want to use it in other systems rely on it. Access on Confluence Cloud is by API token or OAuth 2.0.

How to access the Confluence API

  • With your company’s credentialsOn Confluence Cloud, it uses the user's e-mail with an API token (basic authentication) or OAuth 2.0 with an Atlassian app. Self-hosted versions use personal access tokens.
  • The agent inherits the user's permissions: restricted spaces must stay restricted.
  • Confluence Cloud has rate limits.
  • Pages may contain personal data: avoid indexing HR spaces without a need.

What an iTeam agent does with the Confluence API

Answers with a source

The agent answers questions about processes and product and cites the Confluence page the information came from.

Minutes and decisions page

After a meeting, the agent creates the minutes page in the project space, with decisions and owners.

Outdated documentation

The agent flags heavily visited pages that have not been updated in a long time and notifies the owner.

Guided onboarding

New hires ask the agent and get the right trail of pages for their area.

From the credential to the agent at work, with approval

01

Create the credential

Generate an API token for an integration user or set up an OAuth app with read scopes and, if needed, write scopes.

02

Define spaces in iTeam

In the iTeam vault, add the credential and choose which spaces each agent can read or edit.

03

Test with real questions

Ask everyday questions, check the sources cited and only then allow page creation.

Does it work with Confluence Data Center?

In general yes, as long as the API is reachable from the integration's network. This is checked in the diagnosis.
