Shopify API: what you can do with it and how to use it with AI agents

Shopify offers APIs to read and change almost everything in a store: products, orders, customers, inventory and discounts. Merchants, agencies and app developers use them. Access is through a custom app created in the store or a public app with OAuth.

API guide

What the Shopify API offers

Admin API

Manage products, orders, customers, inventory, discounts and fulfillment, available in GraphQL.

Storefront API

Storefront and cart data for custom shopping experiences.

Webhooks

Events such as order created, paid or canceled, product updated and more.

Inventory and locations

Quantities by location and inventory adjustments.

How to access the Shopify API

  • With your company’s credentialsFor your own store, you create a custom app in the Shopify admin, which generates an access token with the scopes you choose. Public apps use OAuth 2.0.
  • The Admin API has a rate limit calculated by query cost: paginate large queries.
  • API versions are dated and expire: keep up with updates.
  • Customer data is covered by data-protection law such as GDPR: give access only to what is needed.

What an iTeam agent does with the Shopify API

Where is my order

The agent answers customers on WhatsApp or e-mail by checking the order and tracking in Shopify, and escalates late deliveries to the team.

Inventory and catalog in order

The agent flags out-of-stock products that are still published, variants without images and prices that differ from the ERP.

Payment recovery

Unpaid orders and abandoned checkouts get a message from the agent with the right link, within your discount rules.

Daily sales report

The manager receives revenue, average order value, best sellers and returns for the store every morning.

From the credential to the agent at work, with approval

01

Create the custom app

In the Shopify admin, create a custom app and select only the scopes you need, such as reading orders and products.

02

Add the token to iTeam

The access token goes into the vault, and each agent gets read or write permission according to its role.

03

Webhooks and pilot

Set up the order webhooks, test on a development store if you have one, and enable writing with approval.

Questions

Questions about the Shopify API

Is the Shopify API free?

Using the API with your own store has no separate charge. It is part of your Shopify subscription, within the limits of your plan.

Do I need to code to use the Shopify API with iTeam?

No. iTeam connects to the store through the custom app, and the deployment team sets up scopes and webhooks.

Can the agent change prices?

Yes, if you grant the write scope. We recommend human approval for price changes and discounts.
